3.) Billie and Emma

Directed by: Samantha Lee

Though a 2018 film, but the plot sets in the mid-1990s, this movie tells a LGBT coming-of-age story. “Billie and Emma” was the talk of social media since its initial release, for the reason that it does not follow the usual coming out narrative but talks about teenage pregnancy too. Even though the movie is quite “political”, we cannot deny the fact that the movie’s humour is very timely and hits the right beats at the right moment making audience giggle and sometimes even burst into laughter.

It is also unique in its way that it does not follow the typical LGBT film where it is heavy on drama rather it is a lighthearted one and you can clearly see it through the audience’s reactions. It also captures a genuine love story, being realistic as it can.

“Billie and Emma” also has an interesting story and inspiration, the director, Lee answered in an interview that “Billie and Emma” was actually a response for criticisms for her previous movie “Maybe Tomorrow” which is also a LGBT film. While LGBT films are not new, we suggest that you give it a chance, not only will it lighten your heart but it will also allow you to see what queer people go through and understand why they need to be treated equally too.
